Waxing Myths Busted: What You Really Need to Know Before Your Appointment

If you’ve ever thought about waxing but felt a little nervous, you’re not alone. There are so many myths and half-truths floating around about what waxing is like, from how much it hurts to whether it’s even good for your skin. As a beauty therapist with years of experience, I can tell you that most of these fears are based on misconceptions.

So, let’s clear things up. Here are the most common waxing myths I hear in the treatment room, and the reassuring truth behind them.

Myth 1: Waxing Is Excruciatingly Painful

Reality: Yes, you will feel a little discomfort (we are removing hair from the root, after all), but it’s nowhere near as unbearable as people make out. Most clients are surprised by how quick and manageable it feels, some even say, “Oh, that wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be!”

Professional techniques, high-quality wax, and a calm, experienced therapist make all the difference. Plus, the more regularly you wax, the easier it becomes as your hair grows back finer and softer.

Myth 2: Waxing Causes More Ingrown Hairs

Reality: It’s actually the opposite when done correctly. Shaving cuts hair bluntly at the surface, which is why ingrown hairs are so common. Waxing removes hair from the root, giving it a naturally tapered end as it grows back. Combine that with proper aftercare (like gentle exfoliation and moisturising), and you’ll see fewer ingrowns, not more.

Myth 3: Waxing Is Only for Women

Reality: This couldn’t be further from the truth. More and more men are discovering the benefits of waxing, from smoother skin to longer-lasting results compared to shaving. Whether it’s for comfort, hygiene, or confidence, waxing is for anyone who prefers smooth, hair-free skin.

Myth 4: You’ll Have to Let Your Hair Grow Wild Before Waxing

Reality: You don’t need to walk into your appointment with a full regrowth. Hair only needs to be about the length of a grain of rice (around ¼ inch) for wax to grip effectively. That’s usually around 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving.

Myth 5: Waxing Damages Your Skin

Reality: When performed by a trained professional, waxing is completely safe for your skin. In fact, it can leave your skin feeling softer and smoother because it removes dead skin cells along with the hair. With the right aftercare, any redness quickly fades, leaving you with glowing results.

Myth 6: Waxing Will Make Hair Grow Back Thicker or Darker

Reality: This is one of the biggest misconceptions! Waxing does not change your hair texture or colour. Over time, most clients actually notice the opposite, hair grows back finer, softer, and sometimes even sparser.

Myth 7: It’s Too Embarrassing

Reality: This is something I hear a lot, especially from first-time clients. But remember, for a waxing professional, this is just part of our day-to-day. You won’t shock us, and we don’t judge. Our only goal is to make you feel comfortable and confident, and to give you smooth, long-lasting results.

Don’t Let Myths Hold You Back

The truth is, waxing is one of the most effective and confidence-boosting treatments you can choose. Once you’ve tried it, chances are you’ll never want to go back to the hassle of daily shaving.

If fear or myths have been holding you back, let this be your sign to take the plunge. With the right therapist and aftercare, waxing is safe, effective, and nowhere near as scary as the rumours suggest.

Ready to experience it for yourself? Book your waxing appointment today and see why so many people make the switch, you might just wonder why you didn’t try it sooner.
