Waxing Myths vs Facts: What You Really Need to Know

Waxing has been around forever, but it’s also surrounded by a lot of assumptions, horror stories and half-truths. If you’re new to waxing or you’ve only ever heard bits of information online, it can be hard to separate what’s true from what’s just a myth.

Let’s break down the most common waxing beliefs and clear things up so you can feel confident before your next appointment.

Myth: Waxing makes your hair grow back thicker

This is probably the number one myth. The fact is the complete opposite. When you remove a hair from the root, it grows back with a soft, tapered end. That makes it look finer and lighter each time. Over time, many people notice slower regrowth and less density.

Shaving causes blunt ends. Waxing causes soft, tapered ones.Big difference.

Myth: Waxing is always extremely painful

Everyone experiences discomfort differently, but waxing is not meant to feel unbearable. The real truth is that pain mainly comes from three things: tension in the body, the wrong type of wax, or poor technique.

A skilled waxer, high-quality hot wax and correct prep make a huge difference. Most clients say it becomes easier every session. The first time is usually the “worst”, and after that, your skin adjusts and the roots weaken.

Myth: You need long hair to wax

You don’t need to let yourself become a fluffy little bear. Hair only needs to be about the length of a grain of rice. That’s enough for the wax to grip properly without tugging or breaking.

If it’s too long, your therapist can trim it. If it’s too short, you may not get the best results. But you definitely don’t need to grow it out for weeks.

Myth: Waxing causes wrinkles or “loosens” the skin

This one pops up a lot, especially online. The fact is waxing does not stretch your skin or cause premature lines. When done correctly, your therapist supports the skin with one hand while removing the wax with the other. The movement is quick and controlled.

Sagging or wrinkling comes from age, sun exposure and lifestyle, not professional waxing.

Myth: You can’t wax during your period

You can absolutely wax during your period. Some people feel a little more sensitive, but it’s completely safe. Just wear a tampon or period cup and your therapist will work around it professionally.

If you prefer not to come at that time of the month, that’s totally personal choice, not a rule.

Myth: Waxing leads to more ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs come from dead skin, tight clothing, friction and hair growing at an angle. Waxing alone doesn’t create them. In fact, many people experience fewer ingrowns after switching from shaving because the hair grows back finer and softer.

With regular exfoliation and the right aftercare, ingrowns can be avoided almost entirely.

Myth: Waxing isn’t suitable for sensitive skin

Professional waxers use different waxes based on your skin type. Hot wax in particular is designed for sensitive areas because it wraps around the hair rather than sticking to the skin.

Patch tests, cooling gels and gentle application make waxing suitable even for people who think they have “reactive” skin.

Fact: Consistency is the secret to better results

The more consistently you wax, the less it hurts, the smoother your skin stays and the slower your regrowth becomes. Sticking to a four-to-six-week cycle trains your hair into a gentler growth pattern.

Fact: Good aftercare changes everything

Cold compresses, fragrance-free products, loose clothing, and proper exfoliation 2–3 days later make your results last longer and keep your skin calm and clear.

A good wax isn’t just the appointment. It’s what you do after, too.
